How to find the best business school

Trying to find the appropriate school, you have to face a wide range of choices. It means that you have to choose one that ‘suits’ you, i.e. gives a compromise between what you need and what the school can offer.

So, the first question you should ask yourself is ‘What do I need from a business school?’ Then, you should move on to specific questions regarding prospective schools, like whether they give you everything you need. Of course, you should learn beforehand what your chosen school demands from its candidates, and check whether you’re up to standards.

Usually, business schools look very carefully at the people who want to get admitted. If you don’t fit there, you’ll be rejected which is a great downer, or even if you are accepted, you won’t get the things you need from a business school.

How do you find the school that fits you?

1. Think about what you want to do after graduating. What are your career goals? Will the school’s curriculum and other activities help you achieve what you’re aspiring to? It won’t hurt to talk to people who actually study there or have graduated recently.

2. What can you offer as a student? Find out what kind of applicant the school is looking for. The easiest way is to look up the school’s web page and find out what working experience, college grades, and GMAT results are average for its students. If you’re not up to standards, you either will be rejected or won’t be able to contribute much in class.

3. Think about your prospective life at the school. Look up the students and faculty of your target school. Are they the people you’d like to work with? Remember that different schools have different visions and cultures, and if you don’t fit into them, you’ll have a hard time studying there. Try to visit the school before you apply – it would be perfect if you manage to visit a class or an extra activity. Only a school that offers a teaching culture you agree with will be a good fit for you. Again, talk to students and alumni and find out what to expect. Ask about the teachers, the campus, and the classes.

To determine whether your business school of choice is a good fit, you’d have to prioritize your requirements. If the school is able to cater to your top priorities, you could overlook the least important ones. The main thing is to be sure whether the university can help you with your career aspirations.
