You Can Do It: Reject Rejection!

The coming of the new 2017 year has been a time of change for everyone; some people have made life-transforming resolutions, others were waiting for important news – especially, news about getting admitted to university. If your letter was one of acceptance, then we congratulate you.

If, however, you received a rejection (or even multiple rejections from the many schools you’ve considered), you can hardly look on the new year with hope.

Is it really the end of the world?

Of course, the competition is even more fierce and intense than in the previous years. Sometimes, you even get to the next stages, like the interview or even the admittance list, and then your hopes are crushed in a brutal manner.

Still, it’s no reason to give up. A rejection doesn’t mean your professional growth has come to an end. Maybe you’ll need a couple more years to reach your goal of becoming an MBA, MD or any other kind of Master’s degree holder – but it can’t be the end unless you yourself admit defeat.

Be optimistic and move on

  • First of all, try to thinks of other ways of making your dream come true. University can’t and shouldn’t be the only possible path. What can you do, though, if you got rejected? Do not let all your future hinge on entering a school. Give all your energy to fulfilling the short-term plans you have for your career and education, or your personal life. You cannot set long-term goals unless you are fulfilled in all those minor things.
  • Consider reapplying to your target schools. It is not by any means a hopeless endeavor – a large percentage of candidates nowadays are applying for a second or even third time. It has even been statistically proved that they are more likely to get admitted. Why? It turns out that admissions committees tend to view such people as more determined and focused than first-time applicants. People who know what they’re doing and why they need it so much will become a valuable addition to any university’s team of future professionals. Thus, start making a new (possibly even revised) list of schools you want to get into, and emphasize your determination in the application essays. • Remember that rejection is not the absolutely worst ordeal that can await you. It may even give you lots of new and valuable experience: you’ll learn how to reset priorities, how to get better at time-managing, how to make your job experience and academic achievements more complete, how to meet new people to get recommendations and advice, and, finally, how to not give up no matter what. All these things will be extremely useful not only in your education, but in everything you’ll ever do.

Even if you get bad news, it doesn’t mean you’re finished. Never surrender to failure, learn from your negative experience and try again!
