This article provides a comparison of two business schools with quite out-of-the-ordinary MBA curriculums. In Tepper School of Business, which has the relatively smaller program, students have a set range of courses to choose from, whereas Chicago Booth can boast a stunning diversity of subjects.
Are They That Different?
Nevertheless, if we look closer at what these schools offer, their programs are not that different. Both schools are headquartered in steady business hubs with a lot of new startups; both have courses based on big data and business decisions; moreover, both put plenty of effort into their faculty, which they are really proud of.
Both Schools Take Top Spots
According to The Economist last year’s MBA student survey, each of the aforementioned universities has taken a top place, not far behind such higher education juggernauts as Harvard, Darden or Fuqua. It is especially noticeable after both schools have taken a drastic leap towards improvement over the previous year. Against this background, the increase of interest to the MBA programs in the world became clearly noticeable.
How did these schools achieve such tremendous success, though? As we already mentioned, there are way too many similarities in these universities’ approaches towards teaching and basic courses – that’s why we refuse to believe that their simultaneous progress was just a lucky coincidence.
School representatives name the combination of research and teaching as one of the ways to the top ranking of MBA. Researchers and lecturers are not different people anymore; no more isolated scientists hiding in laboratories without seeing any students. Booth as well as Tepper strive to make research a part of the teaching curriculum by using its practical side. That’s the main feature that differentiates these schools from all their peers.

The deputy dean of Booth School of Business, Stacey Kole, believes that outstanding researchers make wonderful teachers. According to her, professors should make the students curious by letting them ask questions and search for answers.
This approach is mirrored by Tepper’s senior associate dean, Mike Trick, who holds a strong belief that the newest research should be immediately implemented in class, which is better than just publishing an article based on the results: in this way, science becomes practical right in front of our eyes.
With programs based strongly on scientific research, students have all opportunities to obtain a unique experience which puts them a head above all other aspiring holders of the MBA degree. In Tepper and Booth, students are doing science projects, making discoveries and implementing innovations right there in the classroom. Every year, the same course becomes different thanks to the students’ creativity and original approach.
There are other reasons for these schools’ growing popularity among applicants. For instance, Booth students can choose their professors based on their courses and accomplishments; furthermore, teachers are campaigning for their future students, trying to present their courses as the most interesting and promising.
