Do Business School Rankings Matter?

It’s by no means easy to choose the MBA program that suits all your educational and professional needs, especially when there are so many things to think over. One of the crucial factors for most applicants is the business school’s place in rankings.

Business school rankings are posted by serious media like Businessweek, the Financial Times, the Economist and others. There are many criteria for comparison of universities like the average GMAT scores for students that have been admitted to the programs, first job remuneration for alumni etc, Magoosh reports.

Relevance of rankings

Still, can we say that MBA program rankings are in any way relevant to the real life? Or maybe future MBAs should consider other factors more when preparing to choose their dream school?

Of course, rankings are still important, as they are meaningful for future employers. It means that if you are a top business school graduate, you have more chances of landing a job after obtaining your degree. Additionally, your salary will probably be higher if you graduated a prestigious school. The most secure way to find out if applying to a top business school is worth it is calculating the future ROI, or return on investment. Very often, prestigious schools allow a better ROI than lesser-known universities, as, despite a higher tuition fee, your starting salary will also be much higher.

Another thing to pay attention to is when a business school has consistently good rankings in a particular specialization, like entrepreneurship, finance, management or marketing. It shows that the university is a leader in that particular field and gives a lot of attention to that major. As a matter of fact, you future employers also consult this part of the rankings, so if they need a good manager or finance specialist, they will hire them from schools showing high points in those fields.

Rankings are useful, but they are not the only factor

It’s easy to think that the best way to choose your future school is by looking at its place in the rankings. Still, even if the school’s rankings are high, it doesn’t mean that it suits you best. For every applicant, there are different criteria to select the best school. Additionally, you have to consider your professional goals and how they would be helped by a particular university.

Of course, rankings are a very important factor to consider when choosing an educational institution, but they cannot be the sole factor. You’ll have to do much more research into the school’s environment and culture to determine if it suits your needs and if it is the best place for you personally.
