Every major city is a system with its own business talent flows provided by nearby business schools. MBAs graduating from these business schools are able to help local authorities and citizens with solutions for their problems, and there are ways of doing it.
City Solutions Provided By Business Schools
First of all, local governments have to be aware of the existence of this new MBA talent. For instance, Esade Business School has published the MBA City Monitor, showing the overall level of international MBA talent representation in a given city. Usually, full-time international MBA programs don’t have a lot of influence on the city where they are located and where their students spend two years of their lives studying. However, if local governments were aware of these talent flows, they would involve the MBA students in solving the cities’ problems – like, for instance, San Francisco homelessness problem or young adult unemployment problem in European countries, FT reports.

Also, new-fangled methods invented and implemented by modern innovative organizations could help cities solve a million of other problems, like, for example, radial growth projects that focus on solutions like autonomous driving.
Teaming Up Business, Programming, Science and Design
For cities, it’s similar. If local governments agreed to create local teams (“special operations teams”) for testing innovative ideas, they could unite MBA graduates with scientists and designers, which is already done in Switzerland by Cern and Esade Business School. MBAs, programmers and designers work as teams to make scientific innovations marketable and usable. Cities should take advantage of such teams to solve problems.
Anyway, such an approach could benefit not only the cities, but also the MBAs themselves: business school students would be able to practice their entrepreneurial skills and develop their networks. Such practical experience will give them considerable advantage at any post-graduate job.
